To illustrate by analogy: ‘My love—you are a rose’ will convey a different image if uttered by a person (1) who cherishes roses for their beauty; (2) who is red-green color-blind; (3) who loves roses’ scent; (4) who ‘appreciates’ roses only for their thorns.
